The school opened on the Feast of St Michael and All Angels, September 29th, 1632, with 62 pupils, and every year since, either Michaelmas Day, or the weekday nearest to it, has been kept as Foundress’ Day, whereon the school goes over to the nearby parish church to give thanks for its foundation and all those who have served in it over three and a half centuries. It was originally decreed that ‘the freedom of the school shall be to boys born in the parishes of Kington, Huntington, and Brilley in the County of Hereford, and to boys born in the parish of Michael church in the County of Radnor, that no women children shall be admitted or boy under the age of six.

Returning from the Parish Church a number of sport games are held against surrounding schools, these last throughout the afternoon until the school bell rings.  Non participators also have a free afternoon watching the sports.

Im Juli fliegen sechs Mitschüler, zwei Lehrer und ich von der Lady Hawkins Schule nach Uganda, wo wir im Dorf Nakigo, zwei Wochen lang in einer Schule Englisch unterrichten werden. Es ist unsere Partnerschule, mit ungefähr 40 Schülern. Wir werden auch im Dorf an kleinen Projekten, wie z.B. am Bau einer Mauer, helfen. In der letzten Woche wollen wir den bekannten Berg Mount Elgon besteigen.

Um das ganze Projekt möglich zu machen, muss jeder von uns £1500 sammeln. Um das Geld zusammen zu bekommen haben wir bereits einige Projekte gestartet, wie z.B. eine Halloween Party, Parties für jüngere Schüler oder aber auch beim Packen von Einkaufstüten helfen. Damit uns Schüler aus Uganda auch einmal besuchen können sammeln wir noch etwas extra Geld.

The ‘Comenius’ project of the European Union gave several pupils the chance to visit the partner schools during the last few years.  Mrs Barlow, the leading and supporting teacher from the British Lady Hawkins’ School, offered two  pupils from Germany to visit the school during the autumn holidays.

After Mrs Barlow had found two host families for us, we searched for flights with Ryanair and planned the rest of the journey for a short amount of time.  Luckily, the flights were really cheap and so we began further preparations for the trip.

After months of excitement for the trip the day finally came; we drove to Airport Weeze, near the Dutch border and checked in f0r the flight to Birmingham. After our arrival and a train ride of 2 hours Sarah’s family picked us up and took us to ‘Pizza Hut’ which we were really happy about because it had been a long day.

Sarah and Andy were so kind to be our hosts for 10 days and  were going to show us Kington and the environment. In the following days we visited the school and met a lot of new people in the 6th form and in the higher years of the school.

We had reason to envy the school students as their school doesn’t start until 9 am whereas we start at 8 am. Even with the different time zones, it meant that we could sleep longer, which was very relaxing. In the United Kingdom, the A-levels are different to German Abitur because the British students are allowed to choose their best subjects in preparation for their exams in the summer. On the other hand, the school rules are much stricter and students, apart from the 6th form, must wear a school uniform.

In the afternoons and evenings, we spent time with our hosts who introduced us to Kington. For example, we spent a night in a popular club called Clyro, where everybody knew each other.

We really had a good time. Thank you all, especially Sarah and Andy and their families.

Pink Day is a day when we wear pink to make people aware of Breast Cancer. Pink Day ist ein Tag, wenn wir rosa tragen um den Menschen Brustkrebs bewusst zu machen. Unsere Schule hat am 1. November daran teilgenommen. Wir hatten wie immer verschiedene Spendenaktionen z.B. Veranstaltungen wie unsere Beine gewachst zu bekommen und  Kuchen zu verkaufen .

Our school took part in this one the 1st of November. We had different fund raising events such as getting our legs waxed and selling cakes.

Jedes Jahr in Kington hat die Lady Hawkins Schule einen Musikwettbewerbstag. Die Schüler und Schülerinnen von den Grundschulen in der Nähe von Kington können von den Lehrern und Schülern der Lady Hawkins Schule lernen.

Vor zwei Wochen war der letzte Musikwettwerbstag, aber dieses Jahr waren es drei Tage nicht nur ein Tag. Das Thema war das Musikal “Return to the Forbidden Planet”. Die Darsteller und Techniker in dem Musikal haben Workshops mit Grundschülern gemacht. Sie haben ihnen Lieder und Tanze von dem Musikal beigebracht. Die Workshops fanden während der Schulzeit statt damit alle Kinder kommen konnten. Was immer am Musikwettbewerbstag passiert, es macht immer viel Spaß und man kann viele neue Leute kennenlernen.

Wir sind in Deutschland vom 17. März bis 24. März 2010.

Wir haben uns am Bahnhof in Hereford um sieben Uhr getroffen. Wir haben den Zug nach Birmingham genommen. Als wir am Flughafen angekommen sind, haben wir eingescheckt und unser Gepäck abgegeben. Dann sind wir durch die Security gegangen. Ich und meine Freundin haben ein Frühstück in dem Restaurant “Waterspoons” gegessen. Wir sind zum “Terminal 2″ und wir haben den Flug nach Düsseldorf genommen. Dann wir haben den Zug nach Langenfeld mit einigen Problemen genommen. Als wir am Langenfelder Bahnhof angekommen sind haben wir unsere Gastfamilien getroffen.

Tag 1: Donnerstag den 18. März

Wir waren in der Schule. Wir haben die Gastfamilien unserer Freunde getroffen. Wir haben in der Mensa gegessen. Es war sehr lecker. Dann sind wir bei den Gastfamillien geblieben.

Tag 2: Freitag den 19. März

Wir sind in die Schule gegangen und dann sind wir in Gruppen für Düsseldorf eingeteilt worden. Ich war nicht bei meiner Gastfreundin. Ich war bei der Rheinischen Post. Es war interessant, aber ich war müde. Am Abend bin ich und meine Gastfreundin nach Hause gegangen. Alle Austauschschüler verbrachten den Abend bei ihren Gastfamilien.

Tag 3: Samstag den 20. März

Heute sind wir in der Schule. Wir sind an den Computern, wir machen einen Artikel für FROschTOsch. Dann später werden wir Mittagessen und einkaufen. Nachher werden meine Gastfreundin und ich in die Stadt gehen um einen Tanzwettbewerb zu sehen.

Tag 4: Sonstag den 21. März

Morgen sind wir in Köln. Wir müssen uns auf Langenfelder Bahnhof treffen. Wir werden in das Schokoladenmuseum oder Sportmuseum gehen. Dann werden wir die Kirche sehen und ich hoffe wir gehen einkaufen .

Tag 5: Montag den 22. März

Wir werden uns in der Schule um 8 uhr treffen. Dann werden wir in die Stadt gehen. Wir werden nach Solingen gehen für ein FROschTOsch Event. Dann sind wir in dem Restaurant ” Clemens Galleries” in Solingen.

Tag 6: Dienstag den 23. März

Wir werden in der Schule sein und wir werden üben mit Skype umzugehen. Dann werden wir ein Gespräch mit Dr Lipski führen. Dann werden wir in der Mensa essen, und “Aufwiedersehen” sagen zu unseren Gastfreunden. Wir werden nach Hilden oder Langfeld gehen.

Tag 7: Mittwoch den 24. März

Wir müssen an der S-Bahn um 8 uhr sein. Dann die Engländer müssen zum Düsseldorfer Flughafen gehen. Wir müssen um 11 uhr demFlug nehmen.

The Forbidden Planet

“The Forbidden Planet” war eine Produktion auf Grundlage der  Shakespeare-Komödie Der Sturm, die Produktion wurde ein Musical, das leicht variiert wurde und auf einem futuristischen Raumschiff spielt. Die Erarbeitung dauerte zwei Tage und das Stück wurde dreimal aufgeführt. Viele Proben fanden vor der Premiere.

Proben

Während der Proben kamen Grundschulen aus  ganz Herefordshire und die Schauspieler und Tänzer zeigten ihnen einige Tänze aus der Show. Die Schauspieler  bestellten auch besondere T-Shirts für ihre Bühnenkostüme.

“The Forbidden Planet” was a production set on the Shakespearian play  the Tempest; the production was a musical which was altered slightly and set on a futuristic spacecraft. The production lasted two days and was performed three times and many rehearsals took place before the opening night.

Rehersals

During the rehersals primary schools from around Herefordshire came and the cast and dancers showed them some dances from the show. The cast also had to order T-shirts for part of their costume for the production.

The French exchange is a project run from Lady Hawkins School with a link school in Calvisson, France. The first exchange took place in 1993 at l’Argentière-la-bessée, hautes-alpes (05) France. The exchange has been running for 17 years and has been enjoyed and experienced by a large number of students. The exchange involves a group of students from both our school and the French visiting each other. Each English student is matched with a French partner and they email each other the months before the exchange. When the French visit us they are accommodated by the partner they have been matched with and the same when we go to France. For the English students, travelling to France includes an early morning train from Hereford train station to Paddington, London. Then took the underground to St.Pancreas where we caught the Eurostar. Then the TGV, another train that took us straight to Nimes, however it did take 4 hours! The exchange is filled with many activities. Whilst in France we really get a taste of the French culture and local history. Over the years that the exchange has been running activities taken place in France include: Walk to glacier blanc, visit to Aix en provence, visit to Briançon, visit to Paris, visit to Amiens, visit to Compiègne and the château and armistice train, visit to Nîmes, visit to Pont du Gard, visit to Aigues Mortes, visit to Camargue, visit to Stes. Maries de la Mer.

The UK maths challenge takes place every year in Cardiff. 6 pupils from our school traveled this year to a school in Cardiff for the day to take part in the UK junior maths challenge. Here we did a range of maths challenges for example: we had to do a maths relay which included us answering maths puzzles and the running to the finish to get it marked and then running back to do another one; simple maths puzzles and complicated maths puzzles. After lunch we moved on to much harder maths, eg. algabra, surds and long division. Everyone had fun and it was a very productive day.

Der Mathematikwettbewerb in Großbritanien findet jedes Jahr in Cardiff statt. 6 Schüler von unserer Schule reisten in diesem Jahr zu einer Schule in Cardiff, um an dem Juniormathematik-Wettbewerb teilzunehmen. Hier mussten sie eine Reihe von Mathematik-Aufgaben lösen, zum Beispiel eine Mathematikstaffel, in der wir wie in einer normalen Laufstaffel laufen mussten um die Aufgaben zu lösen. Nach dem Mittagessen bekamen wir schwierigere Matheaufgaben, zum Beispiel Algebra, irrationale Zahlen und Stoff aus einer Klasse über uns. Jeder hatte Spaß, und es war ein sehr produktiver Tag.
